How AI Is Changing Video Production in India

Indian brands need more video than ever: Reels every week, product videos for every listing, ads in several languages and explainers for customers across the country. Traditional production alone struggles to keep up with that volume and budget. AI doesn’t replace production. It changes which parts are slow and expensive.

We’ve spent more than ten years in media production and post-production, and we now use AI every day. This guide covers where AI genuinely helps in Indian video production today and where you still need a camera crew.

1. Pre-production: faster scripts, storyboards and mood boards

Planning used to take days of back-and-forth. AI tools can now draft script options, shot lists and visual mood boards in minutes, so the team spends its time choosing and refining instead of starting from a blank page.

  • Script drafts: several hooks and versions for different platforms from one brief.
  • Storyboards: AI-generated frames that show the client the look before anyone books a location.
  • Shot lists: structured lists that a crew can actually work from.

The creative judgement still comes from people. AI just gets you to the decision faster.

2. AI visuals: product shots, backgrounds and concept films

For e-commerce and D2C brands, AI image and video generation is especially useful. A single product photo can become lifestyle scenes, seasonal campaigns and festive versions for Diwali, Holi or Onam without a new shoot each time.

It works best when someone who understands lighting, lenses and composition directs it. Generic prompts produce generic results; prompts written like a cinematographer’s brief produce images that look photographed.

3. Localisation: one video, many Indian languages

This is where AI changes the economics the most for India. AI voice-overs and dubbing can take one master video into Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Bengali, Gujarati and more, with subtitles to match. A national campaign no longer needs a separate recording session for every language.

Always have a native speaker review each version. Tone, idioms and brand names need a human ear.

4. Post-production: editing, clean-up and repurposing

  • Rough cuts and transcripts: AI finds the best takes and turns interviews into searchable text.
  • Repurposing: long videos and podcasts become dozens of captioned vertical clips for Reels and Shorts.
  • Restoration and upscaling: older footage can be cleaned up and upscaled for today’s screens.

Colour grading and the final edit still benefit hugely from an experienced editor’s eye. That’s the difference between “AI-made” and “professionally finished”.

5. Where a real shoot still wins

  • Founders and real people: customers trust real faces and real voices.
  • Products that must look exactly right: texture, colour and scale matter for fashion, food and jewellery.
  • Events and documentaries: real moments can’t be generated.
  • Hero brand films: the flagship piece that defines a brand usually deserves a crew.

6. The hybrid approach most brands should use

The most cost-effective model we see is shoot once, generate many: a focused shoot for the hero film and key product shots, then AI for variations, cut-downs, languages and platform formats. You get the credibility of real footage and the volume of AI.

7. Use AI responsibly

  • Use commercially licensed AI tools for client work.
  • Never use a real person’s face or voice without their documented consent.
  • Label AI-generated content where platforms or laws require it.
  • Review every output before it goes live.

Frequently asked questions

Is AI video cheaper than a traditional shoot?

Often, for variations, localisation and social content. For a hero film or anything featuring real people, a shoot is usually still the better investment. Many brands save the most by combining both.

Can AI dub videos into Indian languages?

Yes. AI voice-over and dubbing tools support many Indian languages. A native speaker should review every version for tone and accuracy.

Is AI-generated video safe to use commercially?

It can be, if it’s made with commercially licensed tools and without using anyone’s likeness or voice without consent. Check platform rules on labelling AI content.
